Add a zoom fuction
The most obvious thing missing int he current version is a zoom function. Ideally, for research, the images would be of super high quality allowing us to see at a higher resolution than the eye

I really support this idea. When I click on the image on the new site, it's not blown up or large. It feels small - certainly smaller than on the old site. Please provide a way to view the image larger.
